John & Becky’s Movie Review of World War Z

worldwarZBecky and I went to see World War Z on Sunday at the Regal Cinemas in Lone Tree, CO. The MovieFone website at World War Z describes the movie as follows…

”Max Brooks’ epic tome of a fictional time of global war against the undead is brought to life in this Paramount Pictures/Plan B production. Quantum of Solace’s Marc Forster directs from a script by Changeling scribe J. Michael Straczynski along with the writing team of Matthew Michael Carnahan, Damon Lindelof, and Drew Goddard. Brad Pitt stars as a journalist covering the disaster, with Mireille Enos, Anthony Mackie, and Bryan Cranston heading up the rest of the cast…”

The Review: World War Z is a zombie movie about the coming destruction of mankind from a runaway virus that is unleashed on the planet.  I thought this movie was going to really suck and I wasn’t very interested in seeing it, even though Brad Pitt usually picks pretty good roles in films.  The movie trailers didn’t do this film any favors and they probably should have just showed the title and not showed any of the film since it looked like a ridiculous zombie movie.

This movie rocked!  I really liked it, Becky liked it even Bianca and her friend liked it.  The boys didn’t go see it with us since Conroy was out of town and Corban thought it looked stupid, but he missed out on this film.  It doesn’t take a long time to get into the film, almost immediately, you’re into the zombies being unleashed on the planet and Brad Pitts character and his family are running for their lives.  You never do find out what really caused the virus that infects the population, but it’s a bit like Jurassic Park and Aliens where you really don’t care.  It’s a well done horror film where there isn’t a bunch of blood and guts, but people running for their lives being chased by creatures that are trying to bite them and in a situation that is completely out of their control.

I liked that it was realistic, showing that “Mother Nature” is a beast that you don’t want to mess with and how as a society we may unleash something that we can’t control.  God has clearly put controls into nature for our benefit, but if you mess with them, you may unleash Hell on Earth, such as the disappearance of the honey bee for example.  The movie didn’t pull any punches either.  It showed how people will act in desperate situations and that if you’re not useful to the Government in times of crisis than you and your family are expendable.

If you are in the mood for a scary movie with a good story then go and check out World War Z.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Bling Ring

blingringBecky and I went to see The Bling Ring yesterday at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO. The MovieFone website at The Bling Ring describes the movie as follows…

”In the fame-obsessed world of Los Angeles, a group of teenagers take us on a thrilling and disturbing crime-spree in the Hollywood hills. Based on true events, the group, who were fixated on the glamorous life, tracked their celebrity targets online, and stole more than 3 million in luxury goods from their homes. Their victims included Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, and Rachel Bilson, and the gang became known in the media as “The Bling Ring…”

The Review:  The Bling Ring is a very strange film that is based on a true story about a group of young people who thought it would be cool to break into celebrity homes and steal their stuff.  The movie sucks you in since you really can’t believe what you’re watching, as these criminals try to figure out when their targets won’t be home and then they can go into their homes and rob them.  The crazy thing is how they got away with it.

The movie is not great, but it’s fascinating because we couldn’t believe how stupid these people were and the amount of risks they were willing to take in order to obtain fancy stuff.  They were not even concerned about getting caught, believing they wouldn’t be found out.  They even wore items they stole and posted their photos on Facebook.  The movie is nuts because these people were crazy.  They broke into the home of Paris Hilton five times, along with numerous other celebrities.

It’s a good movie because it’s interesting, but it isn’t great.  The people are so strange that it’s a bit like watching a movie about people who need serious therapy.  In some ways it’s like a reality show, which is probably why we liked it.  I don’t think it was worth the price of admission, but it does make for a good rental.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Hangover Part III

thehangoverIIIBecky and I went to see The Hangover Part III a couple of weeks ago at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO. The MovieFone website at The Hangover III describes the movie as follows…

“”The Hangover Part III’ is the third and final film in director Todd Phillips’ record-shattering comedy franchise. This time, there’s no wedding. No bachelor party. What could go wrong, right? But when the Wolfpack hits the road, all bets are off….”

The Review:  The Hangover Part III is the final installment of the Trilogy about the “wolf pack”, the three guys who go to Las Vegas in search of fun and excitement only to end up in a situation of Mayhem.  The first one was the best of the three, the third one doesn’t save the second one, it’s just too much of the same characters doing the same stupid things.  That’s the problem with sequels though since all too often you’re hoping for something different and you just get more of the same.

There are a few funny scenes in this movie and some that are disturbing.  The initial story in the film is completely over-the-top and if you’re an animal lover you’re not going to like the scene with the giraffe, but it’s funny only because it is totally ridiculous.  It doesn’t really get much better though and that’s the problem with this movie is that it’s just so far fetched from a comic standpoint that it’s hard to watch.  One of the lead characters uses the “F” word about every other sentence too that is very annoying.

The movie is not terrible, but it’s not very good either.  We would have to rate it as a Don’t Bother or being a Rental at best.  I rarely agree with the professional movie critics, but in this case I have to agree since most of them gave it 1 1/2 stars and we’re going with 2 stars at the most for this one.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of The Internship

theinternshipBecky and I went to see The Internship last Weekend at the AMC Theater in Las Vegas, NV with our kids Conroy, Corban and Bianca. The MovieFone website at The Internship describes the movie as follows…

“‘Wedding Crashers duo Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn reteam on this Shawn Levy-directed comedy as two out of work salesmen who have to compete against an army of younger interns for a job at Google in this 20th Century Fox production…”

The Review:  The Internship is a pretty funny movie about two guys who lose their job and go to try to work for Google as Interns, but have no clue about technology.  The film has Vince Vaughn playing his usual carefree, clueless self and Owen Wilson doing pretty much the same thing, like a modern Laurel and Hardy duo.  They are pretty much the same characters that were in Wedding Crasher and it’s not nearly as funny as that film.  There are some good lines though, but if you’re not a technology buff at all, you may not find it very funny and a bit too predictable.

They have the bar, stripper scene that wasn’t necessary with some other parts of the film that were not really needed.  The biggest problem with the film is it’s really a massive PR Campaign for Google, making Google look like the greatest place to work in the world.  As if everyone would want to work for Google, which is hardly the case.  I know I have zero interest in working for Google, especially with the whole Privacy Issue and how these large technology companies are collecting and releasing data to the Government on everyone, which is totally uncool.  They definitely left that out of the movie.

The movie was entertaining though and we all liked it and thought it was fun.  They should have left out the bar scene and some of the other more adult humor in the film, which wasn’t necessary to make it work.  Other than that, it’s a typical Vince Vaughn movie, so it’s not going to win any awards but will make you laugh.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Now You See Me

nowyouseemeBecky and I went to see Now You See Me this Weekend at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO and then again at the Regal Cinema in Lone Tree, yesterday with our friends Rod and Kimberly and our boys Conroy and Corban. The MovieFone website at Now You See Me describes the movie as follows…

“‘NOW YOU SEE ME’ pits an elite FBI squad in a game of cat and mouse against “The Four Horsemen”, a super-team of the world’s greatest illusionists. “The Four Horsemen” pull off a series of daring heists against corrupt business leaders during their performances, showering the stolen profits on their audiences while staying one step ahead of the law…”

The Review:  Now You See Me is a fun really movie with plenty of plot twists to keep you entertained and guessing about what’s going on.  Many of the critics have not been very kind to the film, some saying that it’s too predictable, which is ridiculous. It’s very well done with great acting and directing and it’s a very clean and entertaining film.

The story is clever as the FBI is chasing down a group of bank robbing magicians, who are giving all the money away to the audience on their quest for fame with really great magic tricks.  There is a plot within the plot as you try to discover what the real motive is for robbing these banks using elaborate magic tricks. Morgan Freeman’s character is making money off of exposing their tricks and he plays an interesting role in this movie.  It was really cool how they tied the whole story together with a famous escape artist and all of the characters had their own unique skills that made it really fun to watch.

They maybe could have done a little better job hiding the “fifth man”, but it had so much going on that it kept you guessing.  We all really liked it and would recommend seeing it.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Fast & Furious 6

fastfurious6Becky and I went to see Fast & Furious 6 last Weekend at the AMC Theater in Highlands Ranch, CO with our friends Mark and Maria. The MovieFone website at Fast & Furious 6 describes the movie as follows…

“Since Dom (Diesel) and Brian’s (Walker) Rio heist toppled a kingpin’s empire and left their crew with $100 million, our heroes have scattered across the globe. But their inability to return home and living forever on the lam have left their lives incomplete.

Meanwhile, Hobbs (Johnson) has been tracking an organization of lethally skilled mercenary drivers across 12 countries, whose mastermind (Evans) is aided by a ruthless second-in-command revealed to be the love Dom thought was dead, Letty (Rodriguez). The only way to stop the criminal outfit is to outmatch them at street level, so Hobbs asks Dom to assemble his elite team in London. Payment? Full pardons for all of them so they can return home and make their families whole again….”

The Review:  It’s a repeat of every other Fast & Furious movie and it’s incredible that they have been able to make six of these movies.  This is a 100% pure guy flick.  It’s mindless, ridiculous, far-fetched, unbelievable, should I keep going?  It’s still a fun action movie with fast hot cars and beautiful women, but the story is really laughable and the main characters are pretty much indestructible with The Rock looking like he eats steroids for all three meals.  All I can say is, “that’s not natural or normal”.  At one point toward the end, his head looked like it was two of Vin Diesels.

Becky and Maria didn’t like this movie at all and thought it was a complete waste of time.  I liked it for the action and fast cars and Mark liked it for the action and the hot women.  Although I hate seeing them destroy so many great cars, which is like a horror movie for me and at times this movie plays out like a horror movie, especially a crazy scene with a tank rolling over cars on a freeway.  The characters were also totally ridiculous at times, more like super hero’s than real people.  You definitely have to look past the absurdity of the film and get ready for the 7th because that’s coming for sure.

If you like these movies, you’ll probably like this one.  If you don’t than go with Becky’s advice and skip it.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Star Trek Into Darkness

startrekdarknessBecky and I went to see Star Trek Into Darkness last Weekend at the AMC Theater at Castle Rock, CO. The MovieFone website at Star Trek Into Darkness describes the movie as follows…

“The Star Trek franchise continues with this follow-up to 2009’s J.J. Abrams-directed reboot. Abrams returns to direct from a script by Damon Lindelof and the writing team of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. The crew of the Enterprise engages in an epic battle of good versus evil after being summoned home, only to discover Starfleet in ruins, and they venture into a war zone to find the powerful villain (Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch) responsible for the devastation…”

The Review:  Star Trek Into Darkness is the second trip into the world of the new Star Trek series with Chris Pine as Captain James T Kirk.  It’s a continuation of the previous movie with an addition of the famous Khan character from the Wrath of Khan.  If you’re a Star Trek fan you’ll like this movie and you’ll see the correlation to the original television series and the Khan character.  Except for the fact that the character Khan really didn’t fit the mold of the previous Khan characters for some reason.

The movie has a bit of a Soap Opera feel to it, more like the television series and it had plenty of action.  It’s a fun movie to watch, but I thought the first one was much better and Becky got bored with it, since she’s not a science fiction, Star Trek fan anyway.  Still, this movie is much better than the older versions that they had done previously that were pretty lame and the characters are great, true to the original, such as the classic “Dammit Jim, I’m a Doctor…” line by Bones in this new movie.  There are a number of things like this that are pretty cool to the Star Trek fan.  I watched the television series growing up, so I caught it quickly, along with many other people in the audience.

We liked the movie and thought it was the price of admission, especially if you’re a Star Trek fan, but I have to say it was just Worth The Trip and not a Don’t Miss It.  Becky agreed with me on this one, which is “highly unusual”.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Iron Man 3

ironman3Becky and I went to see Iron Man 3 last Friday with my Mom and Dad and our three kids at the AMC Theater at Highlands Ranch, CO. The MovieFone website at Iron Man 3 describes the movie as follows…

“Marvel’s ‘Iron Man 3’ pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?…”

The Review:  Iron Man 3 is a fun film, if you’re a fan of the Iron Man series and Marvel Super Hero movies.  If you’re not a fan of these movies, then you probably are not going to like it that much.  It’s a continuation of the saga for Tony Stark with more twists and turns than the previous films, including the bad guy, who is much worse than the previous bad guys that he’s faced.  With the exception of The Avengers film that comes into play with this movie where he had to face aliens with super powers, but he had help from all of The Avengers, where this time he has to match wits with a brilliant villain.

The story is pretty good this time around with a person from Tony’s past coming to haunt him.  I liked the way they used a character actor to hide the real bad guy in the movie, which was pretty clever.  He also had to face another genius like himself that made it much more entertaining and interesting compared to most bad guys that are more brawn than brain.

We are all fans of the Iron Man series, so we all thought it was a great blockbuster for the year and it’s proving to do extremely well at the box office.  Most people that I’ve spoken to who have seen the film liked it.  It’s not over the top fantastic, since it’s a sequel, but it’s definitely worth the price of admission for some good entertainment.

John & Becky’s Movie Review Of Pain & Gain

painandgainBecky and I went to see Pain & Gain yesterday with our friend Mark at the Alamo Theater at Aspen Grove in Littleton, CO. The MovieFone website at Pain & Gain describes the movie as follows…

“Michael Bay directs this ripped-from-the-headlines tale of a group of bodybuilding criminals in a Paramount Pictures production starring Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson. Anthony Mackie, Ed Harris, and Rob Corddry co-star…”

The Review:  Before I review the movie, let me review this new movie theater Alamo at the Aspen Grove mall.  We wouldn’t recommend going here, unless you want to feel like you’re in grade school with a Hall Monitor watching your every move.  I understand that there are security concerns today with the Aurora shooting, so theaters have tightened security.

However,  when you’re paying top dollar to see a first run movie, you’re spending another $15 on popcorn and a soda at the theater, you don’t want to have someone come up to you during the movie and ask you to put the piece of Ghirardelli chocolate that you pulled out of your pocket away or they will have to remove you from the theater because they don’t allow outside food or drinks.  My response is “Thanks, but no thanks.”  That was our first and last visit to that theater.

Pain & Gain is a Michael Bay action film that’s based on a true story about some body builders who turned into criminals with a crazy scheme to steal money from some of the club’s clients.  It’s very strange and a bit like Scarface or Reservoir Dogs in the violence department, which was a bit too much for all of us.

What makes this film absolutely unbelievable is that it’s based on a true story and sometimes fact is stranger than fiction.  In this case, this is definitely true.  It’s hard to believe how stupid, evil and self-centered these three thugs were and you have to believe that the steroids they took totally whacked with their minds to do such heinous crimes.

If you ever have watched CSI Miami, this movie could be an episode or several episodes with attempted murder, robbery, bank robbery, arson, murder, it’s just incredible that these guys functioned in society as long as they did.  In fact, what really blew my mind was when the lead character went back to work after committing his crimes as though nothing had happened and how bold they were about their crimes.

Pain & Gain is completely insane.  It’s a whacky and horrific story, that borders on being a horror movie with the characters being so maniacal and twisted where you really don’t know what they will do next, while justifying their crimes.  The acting was good, the characters were over-the-top, but overall we couldn’t recommend it as a good movie because it’s just too weird and difficult to watch at times.

I liked it more than Becky and Mark and would probably say it’s on the border of Worth The Trip and being a Rental because it was fascinating from a psychological standpoint of watching people go nuts. Becky and Mark thought it was a rental though and I’m not sure if they liked it enough to give it a rental rating.  I’m still going to go with rental though since it’s not that entertaining as much as disturbing.

John & Becky’s Movie Review of Oblivion

oblivionposter1Becky and I went to see Oblivion last Weekend at the AMC Theater in Castle Rock, CO. The Fandango website at Oblivion describes the movie as follows…

“In the year 2077, Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) works as a security repairman on an Earth left empty and devastated after a war with aliens. Jack has two weeks left before his mission ends and he joins his fellow survivors on a faraway colony. However, Jack’s concept of reality comes crashing down after he rescues a beautiful stranger (Olga Kurylenko) from a downed spacecraft. The woman’s arrival triggers a chain of events that culminates in Jack’s nearly single-handed battle to save mankind…”

The Review:  Oblivion is the latest Tom Cruise flick and although he’s a nut, this movie is pretty good.  Becky didn’t like it at all, so I’ll get that right upfront about that because she doesn’t like science fiction to begin with and this is definitely a sci-fi flick.  She fell asleep for most of the movie, since we had ran an Ultra-Marathon earlier in the day and I talked her into going and seeing this movie with me and Conroy.

The movie has a good story about Earth in the future and how technologically advanced aliens had taken over the planet, only to be defeated by humans, who ended up losing the planet in the process.  It has plenty of twists and turns, including some cloning in the futuristic world.  I thought it was well done and pretty cool, but it does move slow at times.  If you’re a Tom Cruise fan you should like it, Morgan Freeman is in this movie too, but he doesn’t do much.  It’s not a great flick, but it was worth the price of admission.

Conroy and I both liked it and Becky said to skip it.
